TEXT CURATORIAL

The exhibition Riverane is a multidisciplinary project at the intersection of archival practices, documentary photography, video art, and site-specific installations, created by Ghenadie Popescu, Oxana Capațîna, Bogdan Postolaki, and Vili Mahnenco.

Through a series of visual narratives, the exhibition explores the intricate, interdependent relationship between humanity and the natural environment. Spanning over five decades, Riverane reflects on the rise of consumerism and the alarming degradation of water resources, positioning humans as both the most reliant on and the most destructive force within ecosystems.

Challenging the common perception of resources as infinite and the comfort they offer as everlasting, the exhibition critiques the illusion of a utopian present—a mindset sustained by individual complacency and corporate corruption. This delusion postpones ecological responsibility to an uncertain future while allowing the present to unfold in a state of ignorant tranquility.

Using archival imagery and documentary photography, the project confronts viewers with an unvarnished reality: plastic waste merging into natural landscapes and human life centered around polluted or vanishing water sources.

Beyond the juxtaposition of past and present, the exhibition incorporates an interactive installation designed by Oxana Capațîna, Bogdan Postolaki, and Vili Mahnenco, inviting audiences to become active participants in the story of Moldova’s rivers. Blending soundscapes with visual elements, the installation underscores the fragility of water systems and the complex challenges of preserving them.
